The 5th Giovanni Anania Summer School on Evidence-based Policy Making is focused on quantitative models of the spatial distribution of economic activity to introduce students to spatial econometrics, geo-referenced approaches, and counterfactual methods of policies’ impact assessment. These techniques will be tailored to agricultural, environmental, development, and trade policy research topics.

The Giovanni Anania Summer school on Evidence based policy Making is organized by:

  • The Italian Association of Agricultural and Applied Economics (AIEAA).
  • The Rossi-Doria Center.
  • The Research Centre for Agricultural Policies and Bioeconomy of the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA).
  • The University of Calabria.

The last two editions of the summer school benefited from the collaboration of the Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis (AFEPA) master programme.

The summer school was born to honor the memory of prof. Giovanni Anania.

Giovanni was a pillar in the profession and a natural academic leader for young agricultural and international economics scholars.

He also was an institutional leader, serving as president of the European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) and as Head of the Department of Economics as well as a member of the University Executive Board at the University of Calabria.

He suddenly passed away on July 15th 2015.

The overall objective of the Summer School is to train young applied economists in the field of policy analysis.

The Summer School consists of daily lectures, lab assignments, and informal discussions designed to introduce participants to the basic features of the models and databases. The curriculum emphasizes an intuitive and graphical treatment of economic theory and allows students to focus on their economic thinking and experimentation quickly.

Both young scholars and lecturers will be hosted and live together at the University of Calabria, in an informal environment, facilitating the sharing of experiences and expertise, but….

… in 2020,  due to the coronavirus emergency, the school was hold online. Yet, the organization on the classes and the technological solutions have guaranteed, as usual, a close interaction between participants and instructors.

Social events and field trips are (usually) essential components of the summer school programme.

The Summer School welcomes applications by PhD students at any stage of their PhD as well as young researchers who have completed their PhD. Applicants are welcome from any areas of applied economics, with a preference for those specializing in agricultural, food, environment, trade, and development economics.

The Summer School is hold at the University of Calabria, Department of Economics, Statistics and Finance “Giovanni Anania” – Rende (Cosenza) www.unical.it
